Formerly a lone ranger in a forest of pencils, Rune Davidsen is a beat-junkie with diamond-tipped needles stuck in his tonearms. All vanity aside, Rune is a complete novice when it comes to the art of mixing records. Just to set the record straight; he’s not here to bring balance to the force like Darth Vader on the cross fader.

As far as a secret hideout goes, Rune is from the land of the midnight sun, otherwise known as Norway. Much like tectonic plates quakes as a gentle giant awakes, he is very much in tune with the landscape, and like to think of himself as a desolate cliff arising from foaming, dark arctic water.

The new podcast comes from Jai Field: a BC boy through and through. Born and raised on the West coast, he was a major contributor to the Okanagan DJ scene for the early part of the century until Design School brought him back to his hometown of Vancouver, where he now lives and works. Whether it has been organizing events, promoting DJs, being a judge for the DMC competition, working on flyer designs and CD covers, or just mixing records, Jai has always had an uncanny love for hip-hop, and DJ culture. Classically trained in many instruments, music is a communication tool for Jai which bridges gaps in age, race, creed, and culture; a way for him to communicate things that can’t be expressed accurately in words or images. However, as a Designer & Web Developer, he does spend his week in the visual realm mixing graphical elements, and piecing together bits of code to bring visions to reality. He brings the same hunger for creative output to his music, and while his mixes cut wildly over genres and influences, that’s just the way it’s supposed to be. He tends to approach it all like some rogue mad scientist; cutting and sewing pieces from various mis-matched sources until life is breathed in to the newly created abomination, …and then the fun can begin.

This mix, Leisure Rules, is a Nu-funk-laden romp through summer weather, beaches, and beautiful people. Turn it up, ‘cause if you’re not bobbin’ your head, your neck must be broken, and that must REALLY suck for you. Need a straw to drink that beer? HA! Check out his laboratory at http://JaiField.ca

This month’s Farmboy Podcast mix comes to us from Easton West....

This month’s Farmboy Podcast mix comes to us from Easton West. Thematically he goes by High Culture Low Class or HCLC for short (“It seems to fit with how I think about things”). HCLC grew up in south Florida living on a mango farm located on a small island in the Gulf of Mexico.

The island was just close enough to Miami to develop a love for the booty bass yet just far away enough that much of his creativity was based in images. Most of his time was spent honing his visual endeavours in art school. Spare time was spent with his friend’s MPC 2000xl and a pirated copy of Reason, which was his first foray into electronic music. Although HCLC works mainly as a graphic designer, since graduating from art school he has tried to spend more and more time making music “be it DJing, producing or learning how to play phat basslines with my crappy midi controller.” Check out his website http://www.highculturelowclass.com and his mix for this month’s Farmboy Podcast!

We first featured DJ Degree One back in November, and he was kind enough to make us a second mix for this month’s podcast. Hailing from Victoria B.C. by way of Salt Spring Island, DJ Degree One has been a fundamental figure in the West Coast hip hop scene since 1990.

Starting off in Victoria’s first recognized hip hop group, ‘Sound Advice’ as an M.C., he then launched the original ‘Spittin’ Rhymes’ radio show, broadcast on CFUV 101.9fm, a much listened to weekly radio show before the age of internet music! Degree made the move to rockin’ the turntables out at parties and clubs in ‘97. Progressing through the years he also became Victoria’s premier hip-hop concert promoter. He has shared the stage with some incredible DJ’s and now plays over 150 shows a year! He moved to Madison, WI in 1992 and promptly fell in love in with rave music. Seventeen years later and he’s still rockin’ the decks, having played in clubs all over Madison and Milwaukee. Enjoy a little sample his music in a special mix for this month’s Farmboy Podcast!

This month’s featured DJ is Rob Caruk.

He is part of the Low Motion crew which holds down one of Vancouver’s most forward thinking weeklies (Low Motion @ Back Room of Shine Thursdays). He’s been collecting dance music of all genres since the early 90’s. Speaking about this month’s Farmboy podcast he says, “I’ve created an eclectic mix of some of the styles I’m really into.
This month’s podcast features DJ ToXiK. Now living in Vancouver Canada, he’s played some of the hottest clubs in India, Hong Kong and Kuala Lampur. It’s no wonder he’s garnered such a warm reception. This month he created a special blend of tribal progressive house just for our listeners. Check it out!

As always, our monthly Podcast also features an interview with one of our Farmboy contributing artists. Led by our “hostess-with-the-mostess” Fatima Travassos, this month’s featured artist is Trevor Cooper. With over 30 years in the photography world, Trevor started with Standard 8 movie cameras and has since progressed through technologies into the digital format he now explores. His work has been published in Powder Magazine, Ski Canada and a range of tourism magazines. According to Trevor, “Photography is about viewing the world through the lens of a camera. It’s all about creating images that tell a story. Whether it’s the opportunity of seizing a spectacular moment in time or the thrill of catching nature at its best. In one brief second, I have the opportunity to experience that moment, the excitement is sharing that with you.”

Farmboy Podcast Survey

Howdy listeners!
This month we talk with Farmboy FIne Artist Stephen Wilde. Born in Vanderhoof, a city located in northern British Columbia, Canada, Stephen Wilde was raised milking cows but really just wanted to sit and draw. After spending a Summer in New York City with Annie Leibovitz he learned how to study humans and learned how to record their actions. That’s what Wilde loves to do. Study human actions in all types of situations. All types of countries. He’s been fortunate enough to have stockpiled maybe two lives worth of human studies from strange and lovely countries that one-day will be volumes of useful information. He now lives in Vancouver with his lovely wife Jet and really cute son, Ed. Despite the rain he still loves Vancouver. He doesn’t have to milk any cows or shovel any snow.
